What is mediation?
- Mediation is a a transformative and cooperative conflict resolution process through which
a neutral third party empowers two or more disputants to voluntarily reach
their own mutually acceptable settlement through compromise and
accommodation;
- Mediation occurs in a non-threatening environment in which parties can
meet, communicate, and reach agreement;
- A mediator does not take sides, decide who is right or wrong or impose
solutions. Rather, the mediator acts as a neutral party setting ground rules,
focusing negotiation and creating a safe and fair environment where both
parties can resolve differences and arrive at a mutually agreed upon outcome;
- Each party will be given equal opportunity to present the issue from their
perspective and to listen and respond to the other party’s concerns. The
mediation process is flexible to the needs of those involved. Attention is
focused on each part’s interests as both parties are in full control of the
outcome.
